Lessons from the CEO of Starbucks, Oprah, and other creative success stories . . .

"You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover will be yourself."
— Alan Alda, Actor

What Oprah has to say about success…

You get more by doing what comes naturally than you do by efforting to get things! I move with the flow and take life’s cues. Let the universe handle the details.

The great thing about attaining some level of success in your life is being spiritually in a place where you accept it and feel good about it and know why you are there and not be afraid that tomorrow it’s going to end.

I am the kind of person who—in all my television history—has not put one resume or tape together. I always figured that when it’s time to go, somebody will call me.
I feel embraced by the camera. Like I’m doing exactly what I should be doing."

It’s amazing to me that I get paid to be myself. This is the best time of my life and I have sense enough to know it’s the best. My dream is to continue being Oprah

Thoughts from Anita Roddick, Founder and Owner of The Body Shop:

We didn’t know how to run a conventional business. We had never read a book on economic theory and had never even heard of Milton Friedman."

We had no money. Every original idea was based on reusing everything, refining and recycling everything we could.

We had a secret ingredient called euphoria. We shared an extraordinary level of optimism, and we still do.

Thoughts from Howard Schultz, Chairman and CEO of Starbucks

I want to inspire people to pursue their dreams. I come from common roots, with no silver spoon, no pedigree, no early mentors. I dared to dream big dreams, and then I willed them to happen. I’m convinced that most people can achieve their dreams and beyond if they have the determination to keep trying.

One thing I’ve noticed about romantics: They try to create a new and better world far from the drabness of everyday life. That is Starbucks’ aim, too. We try to create in our stores, an oasis, a little neighborhood where you can take a break, listen to some jazz, and ponder universal or personal or even whimsical questions over a cup of coffee.

What kind of person dreams up such a place?

From my personal experience, I’d say that the more uninspiring your origins, the more likely you are to use your imagination and invent worlds where everything seems possible. That’s certainly true of me.
